Halsey Spruance
In December 2007, the Board of Trustees of the Delaware Museum of Natural
History appointed Halsey Spruance as its Executive Director. The Museum
opened in 1972 to excite and inform people about the natural world through
exploration and discovery. It is the only natural history museum in Delaware
and houses the state's only permanent dinosaur display, surrounded by
exhibits of mammals, shells, and other artifacts from around the world. The
Museum houses world-renowned collections of mollusks and birds, including
the second largest collection of birds' eggs in North America. Following a
major renovation in 2005, the Museum experienced increased visitation and
membership as well as expanded educational offerings and popular special
exhibits.
>From 1997 to 2007, Halsey was the Director of Public Relations for the
Brandywine Conservancy where he handled all media and public awareness needs
for the Conservancy, its Brandywine River Museum and Environmental
Management Center.
Prior to joining the Conservancy, he worked at the National Geographic
Society in Washington, DC for 10 years. There, he held a variety of
positions including photo editor for National Geographic Traveler Magazine
and National Geographic Television and public relations associate for
Explorers Hall (the Society's museum), World Magazine, Traveler Magazine and
National Geographic Books.
Halsey has completed the Executive Administration Program at the University
of Pennsylvania, earned a Masters in Public Communication from American
University, received a desktop publishing degree from George Washington
University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from the
University of Delaware.
