I believe that Hussein in 2003 is roughly analogous to Hitler in 1933.
Hitler could have been easily stopped in 1933, but almost no one--except for
Winston Churchill--was sounding the alarm, and Churchill was widely derided
at the time as an alarmist nutcase.

Given the impending peak of world oil production, we are not going to have a
choice about reducing our reliance on fossil fuels--because the fossil fuels
are not going to be there. However, during the transition to wind energy it
would be disastrous if we had a ruthless dictator--with a history of using
weapons of mass destruction--in control of most of the Western World's oil
supply.

I personally believe that what Bush, et al have in mind is actually quite
radical. I believe that they hope to ultimately see democracy spread
throughout the Middle East, including Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Note
the special praise that Bush had for the young Iranians that are protesting
against the Islamic dictatorship in Iran. There is a bitter resentment
against the US in large parts of the Middle East because of our support for
dictatorships like Saudi Arabia. That may be changing.
