What is marvelous about the Idyll program is the opportunity it provides =
to live for a short time in another country. Whether it be learning the =
local metro system, or shopping in local markets, or in just walking the =
streets of one's own neighborhood there is some brief experience of life =
in another country as the natives live it. How superior this is to =
traveling cocoon like in a tour bus jammed with fellow Americans from =
one tourist sight to another.
One hopes Americans participating in the Idyll program acquire =
understanding of differences in ways of life and perspectives. Perhaps =
we can shed some of our provincialism and, yes, arrogance in sensing =
that other countries offer appealing lifestyles to people who are =
content to be who they are; they are not desperate to migrate to the =
USA. We love Italy and want to do all the Italian untours. We can =
imagine ourselves living a most satisfying life in Prague. The Marais =
district of Paris and St. Goar along the Rhine are fondly remembered =
former homes however briefly so. I really hope a needless and =
presumptuous war against Iraq does not make world travel for Americans =
impossible.

Hi-
I will join you...I just returned from Istanbul. Everyone was =
welcoming and warm but almost without exception, from bellman to waiter =
to rug dealer to man on the street, everyone was concerned about the =
impending war. No one was particularly anti-American, but everyone =
expressed concerns about our President and his strategy. Everyone =
cautioned me that the current American policy would not work...
I live in Bavaria which is probably the most pro-American area of =
Germany. No matter where I am these days, someone approaches me to beg =
that we not go to war- that this war is not right. =20
The same experience has repeated itself in Austria, France and other =
parts of Germany...I think many understand that the current regime in =
Iraq is quite problematic, but few support the current American =
strategy.=20
