The Criminalization of Politics, from Nixon to Today

GEOFF SHEPARD

 

 

Geoff Shepard’s new book about President Nixon and the Watergate trials, The
Real Watergate Scandal:  Collusion, Conspiracy and the Plot that Brought
Nixon Down, was published last year.  Culminating decades of research, it
documents the due process violations that occurred during the Watergate
cover-up trial.  This most dramatic political show trial in modern American
history resulted in convictions on all counts of President Nixon’s top
aides:  John Mitchell, Bob Haldeman and John Ehrlichman.  Yet defendants’
Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights to a fair trial were trashed in the
process.  The book, for example, describes over a dozen secret meetings
between Watergate judges and prosecutors or other interested parties in
advance of trial.  The disclosures will challenge everything you have been
told about Watergate.
