Just a reminder that our next special dinner is this Friday, March 13th
featuring guest speaker, Colonel Kevin J. Weddle speaking on the topic
below:

 

LINCOLN’S TRAGIC ADMIRAL

 

Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont was the nephew of Eleuthere Irenee

du Pont, the founder of the DuPont Company. Born in 1803, Admiral

du Pont was appointed a midshipman by President James Madison in 1815. In
the course of his long career he served on a number of vessels on missions
throughout the world, pausing to marry his cousin, Sophie Madeleine du Pont,

in 1833. Admiral du Pont was the commander of the California naval blockade
during the Mexican-American War and, in that capacity, captured the port of
San Diego. Among his other assignments were Superintendent of the Naval
Academy and Commandant of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. During the Civil
War he was instrumental in the implementation of the Union blockade of the
Confederate ports, but was blamed for a failed attack on Charleston in 1863.
Although some believe that subsequent events vindicated Admiral du Pont,
that engagement effectively ended his career.
