In the course of his long career he served on a number of vessels on missions throughout the world, pausing to marry his cousin, Sophie Madeleine du Pont,<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal align=center style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Andalus","serif";color:green'>in 1833. Admiral du Pont was the commander of the California naval blockade during the Mexican-American War and, in that capacity, captured the port of San Diego. Among his other assignments were Superintendent of the Naval Academy and Commandant of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. During the Civil War he was instrumental in the implementation of the Union blockade of the Confederate ports, but was blamed for a failed attack on Charleston in 1863.
