[Culturechat] 2/29/03 WSJ: Tourists Get a Euro-Trashing

Travel supports (monetarily speaking) so much more (and so many more) than
just governments. Also, travel isn't one sided - both the parties traveling
and the people they encounter have opportunities to exchange beliefs,
information, feelings, trivia. Isn't this what opens up the doors of
communication and understanding? Not trying to change someone's mind,
perhaps, but understanding why individuals feel the way they do? Don't you
think that many in the rest of the world think that everyone in the US
supports Bush (meaning, wants war)? And don't you know from some postings
here that isn't true?

It's easy to go somewhere you are revered, right, adored!

Remember, you do not have to agree with someone to like them. Or don't you
have family?

The front page of the Personal Journal section of the WSJ has an article
about some anecdotal accounts of anti-American feelings in Europe. The
final
comment by an American tourist in France was pretty funny--"of course, if
someone said something anti-American in French, we wouldn't be able to
understand it anyway."

To the extent that anti-American feelings are a problem, I would assume that
it is worst in Germany and France. This would probably be a great time to
visit the Eastern European countries that have been such strong supporters
of
the U.S., in addition to Western European countries like Britain, Spain and
Italy.
