The Battles of Germantown: Effective Public History in America

In the last century, the Germantown section of Philadelphia—once the scene
of a battle in the Revolutionary War, a stop on the Underground Railroad,
and home to a constellation of historic houses and museums—became an
incubator of best practices for making history relevant to changing
populations. History is not about what happened in the past, it’s about the
arguments we have about what happened. These “battles” can be constructive.
The last 100 years of Germantown’s efforts in historic preservation, public
memory, and urban planning offer useful examples of how contested history
can engage communities.
