The next Speaker Luncheon Series is on

Wed., September 17th

Guest speaker: Brendan Cook, General Director, OperaDelaware

12:00 Noon – 1:30 p.m.

 

Wilmington’s resident opera company, OperaDelaware, was founded seventy
years ago when a group of opera lovers under the guidance of Chick Laird
formed to present classic opera with the finest voices in Wilmington. It is
the eleventh oldest opera company in the United States. OperaDelaware’s
impact on our community can be illustrated by the following:

 

1.               Serves more than 10,000 patrons throughout the region.

2.               Is a source of arts education for more than 2,500 students
a year.

3.               Employs more than 250 artists and staff members throughout
the year.

4.               Operates on an annual budget of $850,000.

5.               Generates nearly $1.5 million of economic activity in
Wilmington.

 

In addition, OperaDelaware has received numerous awards, including from the
National Endowment for the Arts and Opera America. It has also received the
National Opera Association’s Service to Children’s Opera Award.

 

Our speaker, Brendan Cooke, was appointed General Director of the Opera in
June of 2012. 

Mr. Cooke will speak about the role of OperaDelaware within the local arts
community and 

within the local economy. He will also detail OperaDelaware’s ambitious and
creative plans for the future.

 

Mr. Cooke joined OperaDelaware from Baltimore Concert Opera, a company he
founded in 2008. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from
Loyola University in New Orleans.      

 

Mr. Cooke, a bass-baritone, also earned a Master’s Degree in Music from the
Peabody Conservatory of Music of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore
where he was a student of the renowned bass-baritone, John Shirley-Quirk.
