We are currenty in Sachseln. It is absolutely possible to prepare economical meals. I have posted before that one of the most incredible "best buys" is Denner's Bolognese sauce in a jar. 1.45 Chf. An incredible array of pastas from which to choose. Spring salad greens are at their best. Tomatos are now flooding the markets. Strawberries are good this year. Asparagus, including the white are a good price too. A half roti chicken--6.50Chf.
Like the Kover's, we are long time devotees of Migro. Also, we eat at the cafeteria buffets at Manor, Globus, and Coop. Love the weigh a plate hot veggies. We avoid expensive cold drinks and coffee @ 3.50 and no refills. Sometimes we splurge on special sweets, then a coffee is necessary.
Also, store specials change each week on Tue. Just like home. I bring home wonderful coffee beans from Migros. Bought 6 pigs (1lb.equiv) for 5.30 Chf on sale. That beats my $10.50 beans at home. Should last till Sept! Migros is the place to buy chocolate bars to bring home. Often on sale.
Also lots of farmers mkts, Enjoy shopping and you will eat well! Joan

Great suggestion!!! Also,
many department stores have wonderful cafeteria-style restaurants (often located
on an upper floor with views!). And, there's always IKEA!

How about Migros and
COOP? They have inexpensive cafeterias. You choose what you
want, and then have the dish weighed by the cashier. The less in
the plate, the less you pay. Since we were on a tight budget, we
would fill one dish with an entree and another with a
dessert. After finding a nice table, we would share the
two dishes.
