We don't "exchange" USDs for Euros anymore. For about ten years now we  
have relied completely on using ATMs in European (and China) countries  
with no problems. The exchange rate is much better than available from  
any US Bank or foreign exchange traders.

There have been a number of discussions here about the precautions to  
take before you go, such as notifying your bank.
