I completely agree with you that the instant communications desired
today is not essential. However, it sure has saved me some gasoline a
few times when I have called my wife from the grocery store because I
couldn't find what she put on the list! It has been really nice a few
times when someone has been anxious about the late arrival of a loved
one who is on the road and they are able to hear that it was simply
bad traffic. Years ago, I recall being able to stop and use a pay
phone for some of these needs. Have you tried to locate a pay phone
lately? On a past trip to the UK, we called ahead each day for B&B
reservations. I have not been back to the UK in 13 years, but I
suspect that the pay phone situation there is getting somewhat like it
is here. You can probably hit a town and just look for lodging but all
of those folks with unnecessary phones and internet connections
probably beat you to most of the places.

That all being said, I also find many, many people's use of their cell
phones completely obnoxious. When you have to listen to one end of a
completely inane conversation, it can be very irritating. We have been
on overseas trips then some people had to just "check in" with someone
here. Generally, my feeling is that as long as the people here know
how to contact me when I am on a trip, an occasional email from us to
them saying we are still alive should be sufficient.
