[Idyllchat] Visiting Zermatt from Heartland

Hi Alex,

The Swiss Railroad site www.sbb.ch is a good place to browse when planning day trips. A quick check revealed about 3.5 hour each-way commute Lungern-Zermatt-Lungern for a late June date chosen arbitrarily. For example, 6:39 to10:14 going to Zermatt and 17:39 to 21:14 returning to Lungern. This would leave about 7.5 hours to explore Zermatt.

Deciding whether or not to stay overnight and for how many nights gets interesting as you balance the pleasure of being in Zermatt against the pain of paying for the hotel and the pain of not using your apartment on nights for which you've already paid. The former pain is the big one as the cost of a 3-star hotel in Zermatt at today's exchange rate is not insignificant.

Zermatt just happens to be our favorite place in Switzerland. Although we've not done a day trip from the Heartland to Zermatt, it can be done. If you can stay over one night, preferably two, so much the better.

Happy travels,

Dick Stewart

Subject: [Idyllchat] Visiting Zermatt from Heartland

  Hi Idyllchatters,

I have been lurking on this list for a while, and have learned lots of good information. The archives are a great resource.

We have an upcoming first-time trip to the Swiss Heartland (Lungern) in June/July. It will be myself, my husband, and our two sons (age 15 and 8). One of the things my 15 year old REALLY wants to do is see Zermatt and the Matterhorn. By all accounts, it looks to be a long trip for a day. However, we are an active family, and don't mind rising early and travelling far for a "day trip."

My question is this: has anyone done a day trip from Heartland to Zermatt? If so, what is your advice?

I asked the same question in the Untours Cafe and got a very nice response on an overnight trip. If we have to do an overnight, it would also be good to know if anyone did it with kids. :)

  cheers,
  Alex
