Much better is a soft hat with a brim all the way around.  Tilley makes a 
good one but it's pretty stiff.  Instead I use one selling for $14 in 
International Travel News Magazine (the best travel magazine around, imho).

Keeps the rain and sun off your ears and neck.  And when on that dangerous 
subway trip you can wad it up and stuff in the outer pants pocket whose zippered 
inner hidden pocket contains your billfold -- thus making it harder for a 
pickpocket to get at that billfold.
