My experience is that with proper precautions, I don't normally worry
about pickpockets in European cities. Don't forget, pickpockets by no
means are concentrated in Paris, London or Rome.
So many Americans walk around those cities in their baseball caps
with bulging wallets in their hip pockets and huge purses that they
might as well hang a sign around their neck "Naive American tourist
with lots of money to steal". I think the culture of that nefarious
group of people in many European cities is prone toward petty theft
rather than mugging and shooting people that is more popular in some
parts of the world.
