Dipthongs are a killer until you recognize them. You should try Dutch.

Dutch looks incomprehensible until you learn how the dipthongs are
pronounced.

Driving down the highway, you will see a sign at the exit ramp "UIT". This
is pronounced "OUT" which makes a lot of sense.
The word for ice cream is "ijs" which is pronounced "ice".
The word for soup is "soep" which is pronounced "soup". On the menu, you
will see a section "Soepen" (SOOP-en) which is the plural of soup.

There are a lot of words in Dutch which once you learn how they are
pronounced suddenly make sense to you. Dutch was basically formed from the
same base languages as English, just with a heavier German influence.
