[Idyllchat] Gemmi Pass hike

Hi Bert,

We did the hike from Leuk to Kandersteg in 2005. The bus ride from Leuk up to Leukerbad is a hit, as is the lift - almost straight up - to the Gemmi Pass. Incidentally, unless they've put in a new lift, the old lift is rather small by Swiss tram standards. We were near the end of the line and worried that we might not get on. We did. Also, walking toward Kandersteg is the "downhill" route. We were glad we chose it. A nice restaurant comes up along the way just when you need one. Also again, we were too tired to hike all the way back to Kandersteg and welcomed the lift at the end. Now that I think more about it, even from the lift terminus in Kandersteg, another walk remains in order to get back to the village itself. We took a bus back to the village.

Finally, a language anecdote: While on the train headed for Leuk, I asked the conductor if Luke - the way I pronounced it - was the next stop. He looked at me in a funny way. After a moment, he smiled, and said "Oh, you mean "Loik' - the way he pronounced it.

Happy travels,

Dick Stewart

We will be in Kandersteg the last part of June; we would be interested in comments from hikers who have gone from Kandersteg to Leuk or vice versa.

Currently I am thinking of starting at Leuk and taking the cable to the top of the pass and starting back to Kandersteg with the idea that we can always take the lift back to Kandersteg if we get weary!
