Many good suggestions have come up for small towns to visit in Umbria.  The Untour book will have nice information for you.  One site that I have not seem mentioned is in Orvieto called the Orvieto Underground tour.  They offered several different hours for tours daily for a fee? at the tourist office at Piazza del Duomo 24. Call t 0763 3733 2764 for information about tours in English. "From within their obliging tufa, the residents of the rupe have excavated a shadow, alternative city, an underground labyrinth of galleries (or grotte) containing wine cellars, silos, wells, cisterns, ovens, aqueducts, little religious shrines, medieval rubbish pits, dovecotes and more.)  The was one of the most fascinating tours that we remembered seeing a couple years ago.  It is very much worth the time.
