Frank,

We were in Umbria on Untours in October 2006. From our experience,
you won't go wrong on almost any of the towns. You will get a small
booklet from Untours that will give you thumbnail sketches of many
small towns. We also got a lot of information at our orientation
sessions with possible itineraries for day trips. We managed to see
many of the towns there. The best thing is to take your time and
explore.

I would would definitely plan on: Spoleto, Trevi, Montefalco, Spello,
Assisi, Norcia, Orvieto, Cascate dell Marmore. If you would like to
visit an ancient Roman settlement, check out Carsulae. Few tourists
seem to find there way there and it is very interesting.

In your planning, remember that most museums and shops are closed for
2-3 hours in the early afternoon. We found that to be a good time to
hit a local restaurant for our main meal of the day.

We found driving in Umbria to very easy. We did not drive into any of
the small towns. All had parking lots on the edge and walking in was
no problem. Perugia was an exception and your local contact person
can give you very detailed directions to a car park there. The main
roads are well marked. Small secondary roads can leave a lot to be
desired. You will get a good driving map when you arrive, which will
help. One thing we found took getting used to was that road signs are
not way ahead like we are generally used to in the US.

We loved the food. Of course we love Italian food, which helps.

If you would like any more specific ideas, or questions. Send me a
private note and I would be glad to respond.

Russ
