  I've used an ATM card from our local bank all over.  I tell them when and where I am going and raise my limit a little.  I think in most places you can find and use an ATM.  I last bought pretrip currency in 1998.

  The ATMs in Budapest didn't have a choice for English and in Palm Cove Australia the only ATM in town ran out of money on a Sunday night.  Other than this, we have had no problems.  

  On a recent trip to Africa, we didn't expect to find an ATM in Zambia, Zimbawe, or Botswana and had dollars to use there.
