[Idyllchat] Baby robin gone

Bill,

What an extraordinary story even though it ended up badly. It reminds me of
a similar tale with variations. I have four cats and have taken away my
bird feeders for fear they would serve as bait for my cats. One morning last
year, I heard a loud screeching by a number of birds. My cats also heard it
and rushed out of the house. By the time I got there, they were gathered
around a baby swallow that apparently had fallen out of its nest. I told the cats
not to touch the bird and, surprisingly, they obeyed. Meanwhile the flock -
must have been 12 or more - kept circling around and screeching. I took the
cats back into the house and closed their cat door. After a while, the
screeching stopped. I looked out and the little bird had disappeared. I like to
think it was cajoled back into safer territory. I don't think it is
possible that it could have been picked up by one of the adult birds. Or could it
have been?

Well Vance, it looks like you were right. When I let our dog out last
night, there was no chirping. I figured that it settled down to sleep. Our
dog chased something in the dark, maybe a cat. This morning there is no
sign of the bird. There are numerous bird poops under the blue spruce bush.
So he stayed there for a while. But some critter or cat must of got him.

Bill
