[Idyllchat] Stick vs. automatic shifts

I have to jump in here. Who has not, while entering a roundabout and trying to downshift and use the turn indicator, found the windshield (sorry, wind screen) wiper going at a furious rate.
This octogenarian has never had an automatic (it's a control thing) and was delighted that her grandchild's first automobile is a stick. Suzanne

of the road. It was perspective and judging where the car actually is.

When you drive a right-drive car, you sit on the right with the rest of the car to your left. Now make a left hand turn.
You have to remember that you have all that car on your left so that you don't take the turn too tight. Leaving the
rental car lot and exiting Edinburgh airport, you have to go through 3 roundabouts before you get into traffic. I hit the
curb exiting all 3 because I turned to the left too tightly. Fortunately for me, this made me much more careful and aware
of where the car really was before I had to make a left in the city itself where I would have hit a parked car.

The gearshift in the car we had was on the floor. I actually got to like roundabouts. Just couldn't relax or I'd drift back to the "right" side of the road.

I don't know how to reply to all on Idlechat, but i couldn't resist adding the following re: challenges in the UK. How many of you have found the windshield (sorry, windscreen) wipers going furiously, when actually you were trying to shift gears? Suzanne

There is no requirement to use a manual transmission in California. Although I have driven (and prefer) manual for most of my life, I took the test for my first license on a friend's automatic. Couldn't parallel park on a hill with a stick shift. Thank goodness I don't have to very often.

I had several challenges when driving in England. Stick on my left, driving on the left, parallel parking, on a hill, on a very narrow two way street only wide enough for one car. I think I drove around the block and found a flat parking space.
