[Idyllchat] Manual vs. automatic

Even though at home I have preferred to own manual
tramsmissions I learned that lesson when we exchanged
our house with an English family in 1980. I never
could get the hang of shifting with my left hand while
driving on the "wrong" side of the road. I always
reserve an automatic now in Britain.

It's also a consideration when sharing rental cars
with friends. There aren't many Americans who are
comfortable with manuals. While on an Umbrian Untour
my husband did all the driving because my brother in
law had forgotten how to use a stick shift smoothly
and, as I recall, I hadn't signed on with the rental
agency to be a driver. Very few of my women friends
know how to drive manually now.
