Sarah,

I'll send you privately the trip report I did when I returned from our August trip two years ago. It contains some of my personal biases (e.g., didn't care for Arles, though if you are into painters it's probably a must).

One advantage of going in April is that the tourist level is much lower. St. Didier is located a bit NW of Avignon, not far from some wine regions to the north and west, as well as Mont Ventoux, a "must" trip if weather allows. Also recommended is a trip to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, not far from your abode.

Driving in the region is no sweat, particularly as compared to Tuscany.
