We were in Venice for a 2-week Untour 3 or 4 years ago with another couple. We walked all over the city, day and night, rode the water buses all the time, and visited both the touristy and un-touristy neighborhoods and sights. We never once feared for our safety or were afraid of pickpockets.
Although pickpockets no doubt exist, you've got a much greater chance of encountering them in Rome or Paris (and we've also walked Rome and Paris at all times of the day and night and have never had a problem) than you do in Venice. In fact, you are much more likely to have your money supply diminished by the outlandish prices at Harry's Bar than by pickpockets.
We loved Venice and found lots of things to do to occupy 2 weeks there. If anyone is considering Venice, but is concerned, I say go and enjoy. It is a lovely city and a lovely place for an Untour.

We were in Venice for one week in October a couple of years ago.

We wanted to go to a musical production in another neighborhood and we did find it and enjoyed it.
BUT, coming home was a different story we got REALLY lost. We followed some young people who seemed to know where they were going. They spoke English and they were from out of town, but they did help. Anyway, it seemed that we walked for a least an hour and finally made our way to the Grand Canal and then took a vapparetto to the train Station and then the vapparetto that we needed for our neighborhood.
NO ONE accosted us. The streets were empty!

We went to Burano and had a fabulous meal, made just for us, as we were earlier than the locals, Also went to Murano, which I thought was very touristy and met some very rude Italian workmen there. The place we missed that I wish we had gone to is the cemetery island. A lot of very famous people are buried there and often their headstones, etc are very interesting.

I loved Venice and so did my husband who was reluctant to go. Also if you are music lover try to get tickets for the opera house or at least take the tour.
