Ditto to the "go out at night" suggestion.  Walk about and by all means buy a multi-day pass on the vaparetto.  There is no better bargain and its just plain fun to go from stop to stop and see so much for a very modest cost.  Not to speak of a savings on your legs.  You'll love it.
