Leslie is correct--not only in other countries. Another difficult lesson learned: I was volunteering, ironically fundraising, at University of California. I was working in an office, with a locked door I left the office and locked my purse in the desk to go to an adjacent office for a short meeting. While I was gone someone stole my wallet out of the purse. The staff was shocked and disheartened, as it had to be someone with keys and familiar with the timing of the other meeting--perhaps someone we all knew.
The moral of the story lies in advice I got from the UC campus police. They asked why, like so many others, do I carry multiple credit cards, including specific stores, e.g. Macy's, etc.? They asked me if I used them daily--answer--obviously not. Subsequently I cancelled all of my store credit cards and only carry one bank credit card. Not even that extra 10% off with a store specific card during sales tempt me. The Costco Amex card only goes to Costco. It took awhile to go "credit card light", but when I see customers with wallets stuffed with cards, I realize what good advice I got. I also only carry small amounts of cash.
Overseas we follow the advice of others. One credit/ATM card for each traveler, copies of passports/photos. At the destination I carry no cash or credit card (they would get tissues Nina!). My husband carries what we require for the day(s). Once at our destination, I do carry identification, location, and relevent phone numbers of our host family in case of emergency.
All good advice from our Idyllchatters! Cheers. Joan.

Thievery doesn't just happen in Europe. My husband and I with another couple were in the Miami International Airport. As women do after getting off a flight, we went to the Ladies' room. Left the men "guarding" the hand luggage.
When we got back we went to pick up the luggage off of the floor and guess what, missing one bag.
How it happened? A young woman came up to them needing help and being gallant they talked to her and tried to help. Well, by helping her an accomplice came up from behind(?) and grabbed a bag. I'm sure they were very disappointed....it held my husbands RX's and overnight needs. I had the camera, etc in a very cheap, flowery handbag. We were able to go to a drugstore and have his medicines replaced for the rest of the trip.
