[Idyllchat] Verizon cell phone on cruise ships

With all this talk about SIMS cards ( whatever they are :) ) and mobal phones, I have a question for you all.  My husband and I are getting ready to go on a Panama Canal Cruise and we were told that Holland America now has the capacity to let you use your own cell phones.  I went to the Verizon dealer and after making a few calls, it was undetermined whether we could use the phone or not.  Has anyone taken a cruise lately and used their cell phone successfully?
