The suggestions are probably excellent, but if you want something simple , we found the berlitz  book and CD that we got at Chapters was excellent.  You can practice in the car, and the little phrase book fits neatly in a fanny pack. I only use the fanny pack for my little tiny rain cape, my phrase book and map.  no money or valuables.  It gave lots of where is, and menu items, useful things!
