Russ!  You were awfully cranky....didn't you get your coffee that  morning?
 
As to the gondola rides and the weight limitations:  I suspect that  the 
gondoliers, themselves, imposed the weight limit.  So MANY people are  OVER 
weight.  Since the gondolier can't see your ahead of time they have  put a 
limitation on weight.  After all when you approach a boat the  gondolier can judge for 
himself if you are too heavy.
 
We were in Venice two years ago and I have never aspired to a  gondola ride.  
Walking around looking, hearing people, watching and  hearing the gondoliers 
and particularly sitting in a sidewalk cafe watching the  people.   If you are 
afraid of not getting back to the ship in time  stop early and find that 
special table and glass of wine to watch.  The  ships are anchored not far from 
the Plaza San Marcos.
 
Any in event, Venice is magic!
