Russ: Those gondolas must cast a spell! Here is a website that someone sent awhile back that may assist in the timetable question. http://www.actv.it/english/navigazione.php?pagina=tariffe_vaporetto But perhaps the best source may be the cruise ship itself--who has probably rescued many a late passenger? Hey folks. There are four responses so far to my question and if you will note, only one made any comment that addressed my original question!! No wonder some people get very frustrated with this listserv!!
Having been in Venice AND ridden the gondolas, I personally share your opinions. HOWEVER, those are totally irrelevant to the question here.
As a side issue, I am also aware of the very real possibility of getting lost wandering around Venice (remember I have been there). An issue for anyone who is there for the day from a cruise ship has to be concern about getting back to their vessel on time. Does it dawn on anyone that worrying about making it back to a designated point on time might be relevant to some people??

I agree - if I only had part of a day in Venice, I would much rather wander around on my own (with a good map so I'd get back to the ship on time!), sit at a canal-side cafe, and see the "real" Venice!

My first thought was what is the cruise ship soaking them for the gondola ride? My only experience with cruise excursions left me feeling that they were not exactly bargains. They might be better off getting off the ship on their own and arranging their own gondola ride. Plus walking around with no agenda is one of the great pleasures of Venice.

Some friends will be on a cruise vacation that will stop at several ports including Venice. One of the Venice shore excursions offered by the cruise line includes a gondola ride. The information furnished by the cruise line states that there is a weight limit of 230 lbs. for any passenger on the gondola ride.
We do not recall any such weight limitation when we were in Venice. However, that was five years ago and things may have changed. Do any of your recent Venice travelers know of any such limitation?
Incidentally, between this guy and his wife, they would average less than the 230 lb./person limitation. However, they don't want to pay for a shore trip and find one of them cannot go.
