I'm surprised no one has mentioned the traghetto gondolas!  If you have 
a reasonably good map of Venice you will find several "traghetto" 
crossings marked, where you can get a very inexpensive gondola ride 
across the canal to the other side.  It give you just as good an 
expeience, without maybe the singing gondolier!--and certainly a whale 
of a lot less expensive.  As I remember they are less than 1 euro!
