Walt, you've just verbalized what I've been trying to say.  The trick is for each of us to find what option works best for us.  That is, what combination of convenience, safety, fees, and aggravation matches our comfort level handling money. My comfort level is convenience and NO aggravation!  As far as safety goes with carrying so much cash on the plane - even if someone knew I had 5000 euros under my skirt/pants, would anyone dare to try to get at it?  I think not!  And my cash is very safe in my apartment.  Even Untours should have apartments that were safe against intruders.
 
Venice is apparently different from other Untour sites where the ATMs are always reliable.  Venice is a unique city, different in many, many ways from all other cities.  Maybe that's why I keep going back there .
