Ed,

You should have no problem. In 2002 we took the train from Rome to
Lucca (via Florence), then back to Florence then Milan. I just now
checked the Trenitalia web site for trains from Milan to Lucca
starting about 10 in the morning, which would be reasonable for a
flight from the US arriving in Milan. There is a train leaving Milan
about every hour and arriving in Lucca about 4 - 1/2 hours later. You
change in Florence since you are on a high speed train direct Milan
to Florence and a local train Florence to Lucca. When we took it in
2002, the local train went on to Pisa. For some reason the Trenitalia
web site does not list schedules on into the summer and fall. But,
they don't usually change much, if at all.

If you were to fly into Rome the time to Lucca is about the same (4 -
4-1/2 hours) with a change in Florence. I see on the schedule that
there is about a train an hour through the middle of the day. Again
the high speed train runs Rome - Florence and the local then to Lucca.

There is about a 20 minute connection time in Florence, which should
be fine. It isn't that big a train station.

Go for it!!
