Lucy,
My husband I have stayed on three separate occasions with the Helmich's and
loved the accommodations and location of this apt. It is within a
reasonable walking distance to the train station and a lovely spot. We also
prefer using the rail pass to driving. Even the one side trip which you
will not want to miss--the old town of Hallstatt--is a planned group outing
by rail with the Idyll rep. If you should want to visit Vienna, it can, of
course, also be reached by train, but you will need to find a hotel or
pension for at least one night in order to get a better glimpse of the city.
We happen to love the little town of Kuchl.

We have, in fact, never rented a car on any of our 15 or so Untours. Most
of those, admittedly, were in areas where it was possible to have the option
of car vs rail, but we enjoy the experience of reading the train schedules,
getting to the correct side of the tracks on time, and people watching both
on the train and out the windows. This does limit us to some degree, as we
are missing the wonderful experiences which we read about in places such as
Tuscany, but--for many reasons, choosing a site which does not require
driving is best for us.

I have heard good things about the Springl apt. also, although we have not
personally stayed there.
