First hallo to Bob Bestor, who had been to Sommersdorf Castle many years
ago.

Dear Deb,

Munich is a great city, and it is always nice to spend a day there.

If your flight from Munich is a national flight, you should be an hour
earlier, if it is to the US direct, that it should be 2 hours.

We stayed several times at the Ibis Hotel at Munich, which is near the train
station. It is not fancy, but o. k. and quite reasonable.

There is little to add to Bob Bestor's comment getting to the Munich
airport. The easiest way is to take the S-Bahn from the main train station
(Hauptbahnhof).

Except for www.bahn.de <http://www.bahn.de/> look for

There is another shuttle-service:

We hope to see you at the castle!

Sincerely,

There are S-Bahn trains every few minutes starting very early in the
morning. One leaves the main rail station at 0425 and gets to the airport at
0506. See the timetables at www.bahn.de. Click in the upper right corner of
the page for the English version. No problem with the luggage. I know of no
downtown hotels that offer transport to the airport. A taxi, of course,
would be the most convenient but your cost will be about $80. You could ask
your downtown hotel about other airport options such as bus or even private
car services which might be a little less expensive than a taxi.

We have an early morning flight out of Munich the day after our Untour ends.
We plan to return the car to the airport the day before our flight and spend
the night in the city center, using public transportation to get back to the
airport by around 5am the day of our flight. My options seem to be a taxi,
expensive, or the S8 or S1. I'm hoping someone can give me advice about the
following: 1) do the trams run at all hours, 2)will it be hard to catch
the tram with a medium sized suitcase plus a carryone size (we're healthy
and capable of lugging the suitcases), 3) is there some kind of bus service
that runs early in the morning, or 4) does anyone know of a hotel in the
center with a shuttle, and finally 5) does anyone have a better idea?

We have a room reserved near the airport that does have a shuttle and the
train station is .8 km from the hotel but we are considering other options,
as well.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Deb
