Dear Phil -
I think it's WONDERFUL that you're bringing your family to Switzerland!
It's a special gift that both you, and they, will surely enjoy and treasure for
a lifetime. My mom, who has made a tradition of taking a wonderful trip
abroad with each of her 6 grandchildren after his/her 13th birthday (my own
daughter is benefiting from her generosity this summer!), has said that she feels
that children need both an informal and formal educations, each equally
important. Traveling is one of the best ways to provide an informal education and
help prepare them for and encourage their appreciation of the world. I
wholeheartedly agree and believe in this perspective.
Back to your original question - we spent 2 glorious weeks last year in
Kandersteg on an Untour, which was one of the best vacations of our lives, with
our two daughters (ages 12 and 8 at the time). We tried to be somewhat
careful about what we spent, but we did go out hiking each day and decided that we
would spend our money for meals at restaurants during lunches, not dinners.
We ate lunch out every day with breakfast and dinner at home, and I believe
we spent about $500/week on food and extra niceties for our family of four.
If I recall correctly, our lunches for 4 cost approximately $50-80 in
beautiful small village restaurants, although we did have one extra luxurious lunch
in Lucerne, which was around $120, I think. We did not deprive ourselves of
chocolate, good wine and beer, so maybe that added a bit, but not a huge
amount. Hope this helps. Enjoy!
Susan
