This is slightly off subject but thought I would pass it on. Several weeks
ago someone on the list spoke of buying Euros here in the US before they left
for Europe. I answered that email with the statement that only one bank in
St. Louis sold Euros and that they charged a pretty hefty premium for the
privilege. Today while conducting other busness, I visited U.S.Bank who is the
one I spoke of before. Their rate today for 100 Euros was $168 plus $5.00
if you are not a bank customer. I looked at the official rate of exchange
today, April 9, and saw that 100 Euros was pricing out at $157.35 US.
I might add that the company mentioned in one of the Idyll emails earlier
this week as selling Euros was also using a rate of about $168.
If I were leaving today for Europe, I would head to the nearest ATM upon
landing and I suspect my exchange rate would be closer to the $157+.
I'll let someone else do the math but I usually draw out 300 Euros each time
I use a foreign ATM. If I save about $30 each time I withdraw Euros, that
will buy me a few extra dinners during my trips.
The bottom line is all of our methods work. There are just some of us doing
it a little more cheaply.
Tom Erdman, St. Louis
