[Idyllchat] euros

This is a popular topic and if you search the archive you will find lots of
threads about this subject. But I've been relying on ATM's for 10 years now.
I've used them to get Lire, Deutsch Marks, Dutch Guilders, Belgian Francs,
Euros, Swiss Francs, and Icelandic Kroner. I only had trouble once in 2000
because the international connection from Europe to the United States went
down. This caused credit cards to fail as well, and it was a very rare
occurrence.

You need to check with your bank to make sure there are no hidden surprises,
i.e. conversion fees, but many of them don't. I bank with HSBC, and the only
fee they charged me on my Swiss Untour (ATM's in Switzerland and Italy) last
September was the same fee they would have charged me if I had used an ATM
from any other US bank. And they converted the currency at the market value
at the time of transaction.

I used the ATM at a cantonal bank in Meiringen, and my sister-in-law went
inside and converted currency at the teller. When we calculated the end
transactions, I got a better rate at the ATM with a fixed fee of $1.50. Her
rate was very good with no fee,  but not as good as the ATM.
