I expect your main concern will be clearing through customs.  That can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to infinity.  Plan not to have anything to declare and try to get off the  plane and to customs as quickly as possible.

  At that time of day, all the European departures are getting ready to leave, so getting to JFK is backed up, plus you have the rush hour traffic going south to get to the Long Island parkways. Going north against all that should not be bad. I have never taken the shuttle (I leave from NY, so once I'm there, I'm home), so I can't tell you how often it runs, but, without traffic, JFK and Laguardia are only 20 minutes apart.

    Does anyone have recent experiences with the amount of time to clear customs/immigration at JFK? Of course they way things are that is something that could change drastically between now and next fall!
