Hi, Linda,
My husband and I took the Rhine and Castle Untours (two weeks each) several
years ago and highly recommend both. We needed two weeks in each location in
order to have enough time to leisurely explore the countryside, spend a day
or two in Munich and Nuremberg, and just wander around our neighborhood.
We stayed in St. Goar and enjoyed visiting villages along the Rhine by both
boat and train. We also had a car and took a few days to visit friends near
Stuttgart. One thing we did on the spur of the moment one day was go to a
Middle Ages festival and it was great fun. Also went to several wine
festivals including one where a Wine Queen and a Wine Witch were crowned
following a colorful parade.
One warning if you go during the famous Rhein in Flammen (Rhine in Flames).
Altlhough it is spectacular and a lot of fun, in St. Goar there were mobs of
people in our village until the wee hours of the morning. We returned from a
two-day trip to find the streets packed and we had to park a way out of town
and haul our suitcases to our apartment. There was also a ticket booth to
take admission to the festival; but we waved our apt. keys and got back to
our place without having to pay.
We took our two sons, then in their 20s, on the Castle Untour and we all had
a great time. The Castle is within easy driving distance of the Romantic
Road and Nuremberg. We all had fun exploring the castle and environs and
playing with the resident dog, the late great Max. The baron hosted a
wonderful dinner for us, several members of his family and a neighbor family
with two teenaged daughters. A memorable event. My husband and I are hoping
to return to the Castle, but we couldn't resist going on the Alsace,
Holland, Tuscany North and Tuscany South Untours plus three Home at First
vacations to Britain in recent years.
Let me know if you want specifics about our experiences.
