Patricia,
I don't think you should have any problems getting your tickets the
day of departure; just don't wait until the last minute. One time we
bought train tickets from the self serve kiosks in Milan, which
worked fine. At that time if you used the ticket agent inside the
station, you had to take a number and wait your turn. Last fall when
we arrived in Milan, we went to a travel agency that was located in
the train station but from an outside entrance from the street. We
just walked in - no problems and no waiting! They spoke English. I
bought the tickets for several trips and dates at the same time and
the price was the same that I had got from the Trenitalia web site.
One thing I did there, and have done in other European countries,
which has facilitated purchasing train tickets is go with a printout
of the train schedule from the web site. Between my limited local
language and the printout, it has worked great. The ticket agent was
very happy since she could just go down my printout and punch the
trains up on her computer screen.
I don't know about the senior discount. I did not try on the train
tickets even though we would qualify for the age. In Spain a couple
years ago I tried to get the senior discount at two museums in
Madrid. One refused and told me that only EU citizens qualified.
Another did give it to me - although that one did not ask to see our
passports either. It must have been the grey hair that got me through!
