Dear Linda,
We did the Rhine Untour about 5 years ago with another couple. We stayed in Bacharach and loved it and the surrounding area. Good rail service and good boat service to and from Bacharach, plus lots of castles and ruined castles to visit in the region. Excellent hiking in the area, also. Lots of cute little towns, too.
We have been to Germany 3 or 4 times, but only once was an Untour. It is a beautiful country, especially Bavaria and the southern German states, with lovely rolling hills and quaint little towns. Munich is fun to visit, but is expensive, like most European (and American) large cities.
We have found the German people to be warm and friendly. Many speak fluent English, but it is helpful if you know some "politeness" German words and phrases, like "Guten Morgen," (good morning) "Guten Tag," (good day), "Danke" (Thanks) and "Bitte" (you're welcome).
Most Germans can and will gladly switch to English when they realize that your German is a whole lot worse than their English.
If you have questions about specific things to see and do, please let us know and we will try to help.

Subject: [Idyllchat] First trip to Germany
My husband and I are planning our first trip to Germany next year. Has anyone gone on the Sampler tour or is the 2 week tour a better option? Any suggestions on the towns? or sights to see or things to do? We have never traveled outside of the US before so any advice is very welcome! Thanks!
