Wow Marcia,
I was in Venice when you wrote this, and am still catching up on all the idyllchat postings.
The only time I was in Venice in October was with Elderhostel in 1998. It was warm and very humid. Day one was sunny. Days two through six we had thunderstorms and aqua alta each afternoon. We left on the seventh day, a beautiful sunny day.
And please, go into the neighborhoods in Venice, to see more than Piazza San Marco and the pigeons that are destroying the marble with their droppings and carrying diseases.
Have a great time on your first trip to Italy :-))
Lynanne
PS: One tip - While in Italy, keep your money next to your body or in a locked backpack or purse when you are among many other tourists. Those gypsies are professionals, and train their children to be pros also. They can come and go, and you won't know it until it's too late.

Hi Everyone,
Oh, this is getting pretty exciting! My husband and I are going to Italy early in October. If any of you have been there, can you give me an idea of weather? We'll be north as far as Venice and will be South as far as Sorrento. I know that rain can be an issue so I've purchased light weight rain jackets. Any hints or suggestions for our first trip are most appreciated.
Thanks,
Marcia Waffner
