[Idyllchat] Florence/Cinque Terre in Sept.

Corniglia is probably the smallest of the villages. It's also on top of a
big hill with quite a walk up from the train station. It's the one village
that is not down on the water.

We were walking up from the train station to start the hike to Vernazza
thinking up all the Klingon quotes(in Klingon) we could from Star Trek. An
elderly couple walking down to the train station stopped us and asked if we
were German! I had to struggle very hard not to laugh out loud.

Cinque Terre is a great place to practice your Italian. Many people there do
not speak much English(at least not the people there in March) You can get
by with a few basic phrases and a lot of pointing, but anyone studying
Italian should take advantage of the situation. It forced me to use the
language I've been trying to learn for several years now. No one is going to
laugh in your face if you butcher something. Quite the opposite. They
appreciate the effort you are making to speak their language. It was a
refreshing experience compared to the shop keepers in Florence and Venice
who just switch to English when you take too long to say something.

As you can tell from this stream of consciousness that I have many great
memories of Le Cinque Terre, and I'm sure you are going to have a great
time.
