Hi Leigh,
I had always wanted to travel - specially to Venice before it sank into the sea!
Husband did not like to travel, and it was a good thing, because with five children in six years on a printer's salary, it was an impossibility.
After he died and the children were grown, my aunt died, leaving me a tad of money. My sister agreed to travel with me on my first overseas trip. Went on a Globus European tour to England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Italy. The two days in Venice only whetted my appetite for more. While everyone else went on a (optional - expensive) gondola ride, I opted to "walk the streets". Tried to get lost, but found myself back where I started!
The next year I found Elderhostel. Took their Arts of the Veneto trip. A week in Padua and a week in Venice. Went as a single and was paired with Billie, a great lady from California. I was 4'10" and she was 6'. We got along great!
Then I found Untours, and the rest, as they say, is history. What a great company!

Lynanne,
Your family description pictures curiosity as a way of life and the notion that preferences, dreams, and delights shape budgets....that being well-heeled does not account for adventuring (just some kinds of adventures).
I was thinking that since I like travel less than ideas that I might look into elderhostel...I had thought it was a little expensive when I looked but that was before I had done recent trips.

We live in Norfolk, VA.
When two of my sons were in high school, they got to go on a science/govmt course trip to Arizona through school into the Havasu (I think) area (compliments of their great-aunt) They had to take notes and got credit for the trip. A great experience.
My oldest went on to be an auditor for a car dealership, and went throughout the midwest and gots lots of traveling experience then. He's now a successful hauling, disposal, recycling owner in Newsoms, VA.
Second son came to Venice with his daughter and stayed with me for two weeks in 2004. He is now traveling everywhere with his company, and that includes overseas. His trip to Venice was his first on an airplane!!
Youngest son, Larry, is mentally handicapped and lives with Hope House Foundation, a mostly local association that provides apartments and supervision for handicapped people. There is an organization called Sprout, that has vacation opportunities for all sorts of handicapped people, even overseas. He has gone to Texas, Upstate New York, a dude ranch, Bermuda, and his favorite - Orlando and Disney World. He's leaving Nov. 14 for Orlando again, and doesn't fail to remind me that I will miss him when he's gone :-))
My twin daughters, one once, and the other twice, have been to Venice with me with Untours. One travels throughout Oregon, the other mostly stays close lately, Richmond and Norfolk.
You will notice that I did not say I treated them. Sad to say, they all make more money than I. But the point is that they are enjoying travel as much as, if not more than, I have.
Yes, I'm going back to Europe, no matter how bad the dollar gets :-))
