Thanks for the warning. We are some what prepared for bumpy rides. Years ago we had all four wheels on the wheelchair changed to air inflatible tires. You wouldn't believe what a difference it makes for the person in the wheelchair as well as the person pushing it. The ride is much softer. There is also less punishment to the wrists of the pusher.

Subject: Versailles Day Trip
Bill, when I visited Versailles in May 2006 I remember that the long driveway/parkinglot leading up to the entrance (and the exit) was paved with the biggest cobblestones I've ever seen. It was as if they had sliced the top third off a zillion bowling balls and used them as pavers. This made for very rough walking. I would think a person pushing a wheelchair would be exhausted trying to reach the entrance, and it would not be fun for the rider, either. When I was there construction was being done on the front of the chateau so maybe that's why we were using this particular route. I thought you might want to check on this with someone who has been there more recently or someone who knows a different way in. Perhaps you plan to take a cab or shuttle from the RER station to the chateau, if they're available, and then you won't have to deal with the huge cobblestones at all.
