[Idyllchat] Question about Diet restrictions

Hi Linda,
I also have celiac, diagnosed two years ago (right after an Untour in
S. Tuscany where I ate everything - bread, pasta, pizza, desserts -
and wondered why I felt so horrible!). My husband and I went to
Paris a few months ago and I had no trouble finding food I could
eat. Germany might be more difficult, but if you go to:

http://www.celiactravel.com/gluten-free-cards/15-german.html

you will find cards you can print out and take with you. I had
something similar in French. On the reverse side I had the much
simpler "does this contain wheat, barley or rye?" also in French. I
slipped the cards into self-laminating card holders from Office Depot
or some place like that. I took about 10 with me in case they
weren't returned from the kitchen, but didn't need them.
Depending on where I was, I would show them the card - good
restaurants got the full translation and little markets or bistros
got the simple side.

I ordered GF meals from the airline, also, and actually received
them! Had lots of Boomi Bars and Bora Bora bars with me, and 3 boxes
of Blue Diamond nut crackers in my suitcase, for French cheese. Took
one package of pasta for cooking at the apt. but never got around to
using it.
I decided Paris with out baguettes was better than no Paris at all!

I don't know about gluten free beer in Germany; I think there's one
made in Belgium. I have a cousin in the Netherlands who is celiac
and I could ask him for recommendations. I was happy to stick with
wine in France, and am happy with New Grist and Red Bridge in the US.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions!
