Hi Jay: I know geeks are geeks, but sometime, just for a change, try to "unplug" on an Untour, except for your camera of course. It really is a wonderful feeling. Know sometimes it is necessary for business--but if not, think you would be very surprised at the result. Cheers. Joan.

I just got back from our Untour in Switzerland, and let me preface this by saying we are geeks. Between the four of us, we had 2 laptops, 5 cameras, 3 cell phones (1 set up to work internationally, 2 with local SIM cards), headlamps with rechargeable batteries, etc.
With all this electronic gear, we were charging things every night and none of it needed a voltage converter. Everything we brought us was rated for 100-220 volts and 50-60 MHz. We simply needed plug converters.

Whatever you are bringing, read the input ratings on it. If it says, "100-240 volts, 50~60 MHz", then it will work in Europe. A voltage converter will cost you $40-$60. A plug converter will cost you $12.

The only thing that never works right is a hair dryer. Because of this, almost everywhere you go supplies one. They don't want you starting a fire with your American hair dryer.

p.s. - I found a new kind of grounded plug (for me) in Switzerland. This had the normal 2 round prongs, but also had a third round prong centered horizontally, and slightly lower than center vertically. The old grounded plug was a big round plug with the standard 2 round prongs and 2 contacts on the top and bottom of the round plug part for the grounds. Our Untour house came with a converter from the old EU grounded plug to the new EU grounded plug, but I don't know if that's standard for Untours.

I don't know where I got it, but the converter is made by Proctor-Silex. I've had it since before our first Venice trip. It "converts 220/240 VAC to 110/120 VAC, 50-60 HZ". It also came with different plug adapters as well. Note: I think we found that some chargers are already designed to convert to 110/120 without needing a converter, and may just need the adapters. If the charger doesn't say the it converts, then you'd need to use the converter also.

What is the name of your converter set, and where did you get it?

This may have been answered before, but if it wasn't I would like to relate my experience. I purchased a "convertor" for my battery charger from Radio Shack before I left for Venice two weeks ago. The "convertor" killed the charger. It fit the outlet but wasn't of the correct voltage, according to a store in Canareggio. Fortunately, I had taken an extra set of charged batteries so I could continue photographing. I am going to return the convertor" and see what they say.

The only thing I can add to your wonderful list is, take several backup batteries and a battery charger for your camera. It's amazing how many pix you will take when you know you can delete at will. And you will also need a converter for the plug for the charger. And always have those backup batteries with you. Nothing is more frustrating than to have that aha moment with a dead battery.

My first year with a digital camera I assured my daughter I wouldn't take many pix because I'd been to Venice many times and didn't think I'd take many pix. Wrong!! She said, "take lots - you can always delete"

Well, even after deleting I had run out of space and had to delete some more. Make sure you have no less than a 1 GB memory card.

Have fun, and report back to us when you return home.

Thank you to all the Idyllchaters who answered my many concerns, interests, and questions surrounding my first Untour trip to Southern Tuscany.
You lightened my concerns, peaked my interests and had humorous, intelligent and informative answers to all my questions.
Be assured that more than one "ah ha" moment will occur thanks to something one of you commented on.
I have my Euros. I am ready to pack all in my brand new bright blue 21" suitcase. I have a new digital camera, with recent instructions from a camera store. I've gotten (for the first time in my life) a Debit/ATM card and a Capital One credit card. I've learned a smattering of Italian that will be spoken with a Chicago accent. I know how to pack my meds. I have a money belt. I'll make copies of passport, credit card, debit/atm card, medical cards, drivers license.
All of those things are thanks to your comments and stories in the archives.
Thank you so very, very much.
      Grazie. Buona sera.
      Janet

PS - if you have any last minute suggestions, I'll still pick up until Tuesday, 9/25 - then Buon giorno Alitalia!
