Several years ago we had to cancel an Untours trip a few weeks before scheduled departure because a family member encountered a serious medical problem. Because we had purchased the insurance -- that may have been the first time we had done so -- the financial consequence of our cancellation was basically the cost of the policy, and the service was quick and without the slightest hassle. With that experience, we wouldn't think of not purchasing travel insurance when arranging a trip, especially since most of us are dealing with nonrefundable air fares. You simply never know what might happen.
